Vietnam climate dialogue emphasizes human-centered transition
The Quy Nhon Dialogue on climate and transitions recently convened approximately 120 scientists, diplomats, and policymakers from 25 countries in Gia Lai province. The forum, supported by the French Development Agency, emphasized that ecological transitions must prioritize human interests and social equity.
Vice-Premier Ho Quoc Dung stated that success in climate action should be measured not only by emission reductions and funding but also by the ability to protect populations from natural disasters, provide new employment opportunities, and support vulnerable groups. This focus comes as Vietnam faces extreme vulnerability to climate change, with natural disasters causing an annual loss of 1% to 1.5% of the country's GDP.
In northern Vietnam, recent flooding has forced the displacement of over 17,000 people and caused significant economic damage, including losses exceeding three million euros in Ninh Binh province. Approximately one-third of Vietnam's population currently lives in flood-prone areas, a figure that could rise to nearly half by the end of the century. In response, authorities are working to reinforce dikes, rearrange canals, and explore engineering solutions like underground well networks to manage extreme rainfall.
