Vietnam Cyber Security Department warns of phishing and SIM card fraud
The Cyber Security Department under the Ministry of Public Security has issued urgent warnings regarding sophisticated digital fraud tactics targeting citizens in Vietnam.
One major threat involves the use of deceptive domain names to mimic official banking websites, such as Vietcombank. Scammers use visually similar characters—for example, replacing the Latin “a” with the Greek “α”—to create fake URLs. These fraudulent links are distributed via SMS, email, and social media, often disguised as urgent notifications regarding refunds, order confirmations, or account updates. Once users enter their credentials, scammers can steal login details, passwords, and OTP codes to seize control of bank accounts and funds.
Additionally, authorities warned against the illegal trade and rental of “junk SIMs” (unregistered or non-owner SIM cards). These SIMs are frequently used to create mass accounts for spreading spam, impersonating individuals, or conducting unauthorized transactions. Using non-owner SIMs to receive OTPs poses a significant risk of identity theft and personal data leaks.
To protect themselves, the Department advises citizens to verify all website addresses carefully, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never disclose passwords, OTPs, or PINs to unverified sources. Users are encouraged to use official applications and report suspicious messages or calls through official channels, such as the 5656 reporting number.
