Vietnam debates driver instructor standards and safety training

Vietnam is debating changes to driver training standards and safety protocols. The Vietnam Automobile Transport Association has proposed lowering the qualification requirements for practical driving instructors from an intermediate vocational degree to a high school diploma. The association argues that since training periods are typically under three months, higher degrees are unnecessary and often unrelated to driving instruction.

However, the Ministry of Construction maintains that intermediate-level qualifications are essential to standardize instructor quality, ensuring they possess technical knowledge, safety expertise, and systematic teaching methods for high-risk activities.

In a separate move to enhance road safety, the Department of Roads of Vietnam has instructed training centers to update their curricula. New training programs must include specific scenarios regarding maintaining safe following distances, particularly during highway lane changes and sudden speed reductions by preceding vehicles. Training facilities are also required to review their management processes and instructor assignments to minimize accidents during practical lessons.
