Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung inspects flood response in Lai Chau province

In mid‑July 2026, heavy rains across Lai Chau province produced up to 900 mm of precipitation, triggering flash floods and landslides that devastated the Muong Than district. The disaster affected 899 households (about 4,263 people), destroyed homes, crops and infrastructure, and caused six deaths, two missing persons and eight injuries.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung visited the scene on 21 July, toured the flood‑hit villages, inspected the planned resettlement area, and met families of the victims. Provincial officials reported total damages exceeding VND 550 billion province‑wide, with more than VND 250 billion in Muong Than alone. The provincial government mobilised over 1,000 personnel, including army, police and local militia, deployed 11 excavators and 40 vehicles, and evacuated 1,686 residents to safety while distributing food, water and essential supplies.
