Vietnam economic growth forecasts rise amid structural challenges
Vietnam's economic outlook shows strong growth projections alongside structural challenges regarding regional connectivity and growth quality. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has raised its GDP growth forecasts for 2026 and 2027, noting strong performance in the first half of 2026 driven by industrial production, public investment, and positive Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Standard Chartered also forecasts robust growth, predicting a 9.5% GDP increase for the full year of 2026.
However, experts highlight significant hurdles. The World Bank notes that inter-regional connectivity in key economic zones remains low, which limits the competitive advantages of growth poles like Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and Bac Ninh. There is a call to shift from administrative management to a networked governance model that fosters economic corridors and ecosystems.
Furthermore, concerns persist regarding the quality of growth. The economy remains heavily dependent on bank credit, FDI, and imported inputs. Analysts warn that these resources must be effectively converted into domestic productivity and high export value to avoid macroeconomic pressure. Additionally, while inflation is currently controlled, potential pressures from rising consumer demand and global energy price fluctuations remain a factor for monetary and fiscal policy management.
