Vietnam heatwave drives temperatures above 40°C in north and central regions

A severe heat wave has swept Vietnam in early June 2026, with temperatures reaching 36‑38 °C across the northern provinces and climbing above 40 °C in parts of the central region. The Quảng Ngãi province recorded peaks of 40‑41 °C, prompting local authorities to issue extreme‑heat warnings and advise residents to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours.

Hospitals in Hanoi reported that the sweltering nights have left many patient families unable to rest, forcing them to sleep on benches, corridors or under trees with fans and makeshift tents. The persistent heat has heightened risks of heat‑stroke, dehydration and fire hazards, especially in densely populated urban areas.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that the intense heat will begin to wane after 9 June as a cooler air mass moves southward, bringing rain to the northern capital and reducing daytime highs to the mid‑30s. Nevertheless, the current extreme temperatures are expected to have short‑term health and economic impacts across the affected regions.
