Vietnam Enforces New Traffic Fines with Heavy Penalties for Violations

Provincial traffic police in An Giang reported 74 motorists who breached traffic signals or speed limits between 1 July and 15 July. Under Decree 168/2024, drivers who run red lights or exceed speed limits now face fines ranging from 800 000 VND to over 20 million VND and loss of driving points, with harsher penalties if an accident occurs.

In Gia Lai, a truck driver who struck and broke a railway crossing barrier on 27 July was fined 41.5 million VND and stripped of his licence for two months. The violation was processed under Decree 81/2026, which sets administrative penalties for unlawful crossing of railway level crossings and damage to safety equipment.

Both cases illustrate Vietnam's recent crackdown on road safety violations, applying newly issued decrees that significantly increase monetary penalties and point deductions for offenders.
