Vietnam implements new traffic safety regulations and infrastructure changes
Vietnam is implementing various initiatives and regulatory changes to enhance road safety and traffic management. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has directed the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Construction to revise technical standards regarding safe following distances on highways. These new regulations will be integrated into driver training and examination curricula to ensure motorists understand how to maintain appropriate distances based on speed, weather, and road conditions.
In Hanoi, the Traffic Police Department has proposed reorganizing traffic on Ring Road 3 by removing the emergency lane to create three active driving lanes per direction, aiming to reduce congestion on the heavily overloaded route. Additionally, Ho Chi Minh City has begun piloting a new traffic light system at the busy Nguyen Thi Minh Khai - Nguyen Van Cu - Ly Thai To intersection to better regulate vehicle flow.
On a local level, police in various regions are conducting community outreach programs, such as in Lao Chai, to teach safe driving skills to ethnic minority populations. Furthermore, new driving license examination rules are set to take effect on March 1, 2027, requiring automobile candidates to demonstrate specific skills like overtaking and lane changing during road tests.
