Vietnam expands digital governance and cross-border QR payments
Vietnam is advancing its digital transformation through both local governance initiatives and the expansion of cross-border financial services. In Lao Cai province, digital utilities are being integrated into public spaces, such as digital kiosks and public Wi-Fi in Sa Pa, to enhance tourism. Additionally, the Lam Thuong commune has launched a digital management platform, ‘Lam Thuong AI’, to assist in local administration and leadership.
To address connectivity gaps, Starlink satellite equipment is being provided to remote areas and educational institutions. On the financial front, cross-border QR code payments are becoming more accessible for Vietnamese travelers. Through initiatives like VietQR Global, travelers can use domestic banking apps and e-wallets to pay at merchants in countries like Thailand without needing to exchange physical currency.
Experts note that while technical connectivity is a major milestone, the success of cross-border payments depends on overcoming complex challenges. These include legal frameworks, currency conversion, risk management, fraud prevention, and ensuring a sufficiently wide network of participating merchants to provide a seamless user experience.
