Vietnam expands digital governance and cross-border QR
Overview
Vietnam is advancing its digital transformation through both local governance initiatives and the expansion of cross-border financial services. The State Bank of Vietnam and NAPAS continue to expand the VietQR Global system, which allows travelers to use domestic banking apps and e-wallets to pay merchants in countries like Thailand without exchanging physical currency.
In addition to financial connectivity, digital integration is reaching local governance and tourism hubs. In Lao Cai province, digital utilities such as public Wi-Fi and digital kiosks are being integrated into spaces like Sa Pa to enhance the tourist experience. Furthermore, the Lam Thuong commune has launched ‘Lam Thuong AI’, a digital management platform designed to assist in local administration and leadership. To address connectivity gaps in remote areas and educational institutions, Starlink satellite equipment is also being provided.
While these technical milestones are significant, experts note that the long-term success of cross-border payments depends on overcoming complex challenges. These include establishing robust legal frameworks, managing currency conversion, ensuring risk management and fraud prevention, and building a sufficiently wide network of participating merchants to provide a seamless user experience.
