Vietnam expands low-emission rice cultivation models
Vietnam is expanding low-emission rice cultivation models to improve resource efficiency and adapt to climate change. In 2025, the country expects to plant approximately 7.13 million hectares of rice, with a projected output of 43.5 million tons.
In the Mekong Delta, a sustainable development project for one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice is being implemented. This initiative utilizes synchronized technical processes and strengthens the roles of cooperatives and businesses. Early results show that these methods can reduce seed usage by 30-50%, chemical fertilizer use by 20-30%, and water consumption by 20-40%. Additionally, yields have increased by 5-12%, and emissions have decreased by an average of 3-4 tons of CO2 equivalent per hectare per crop.
In the Red River Delta, provinces such as Hung Yen have begun expanding these practices, with approximately 3,000 hectares utilizing Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) techniques alongside emission monitoring.
