Vietnam expressway traffic surges during National Day holiday

Vietnam's expressway network experienced a significant surge in traffic during the National Day holiday period from August 29 to September 2, 2026. The Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) reported that five managed expressways served over 1.4 million vehicles. The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay route recorded the highest average daily volume at 89,862 vehicles, a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

To address rising demand and congestion, VEC is accelerating expansion projects on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh and Noi Bai - Lao Cai routes. Specifically, the Yen Bai - Lao Cai section is expected to be largely completed within 2026.

Simultaneously, the Department of Roads Vietnam is overseeing the completion of rest stops along the North-South expressway. While 20 of the 21 planned rest stops currently have essential service facilities, work is being expedited to finalize the Cam Lo - La Son and Cam Lam - Vinh Hao stations this month. The department aims to have all rest stops completed by 2026 and is also pushing for the synchronized installation of electric charging stations across the network.
