Vietnam experiences heavy rain and expanding heat wave in June 2026

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that on 17‑18 June 2026 heavy rain persisted across Vietnam’s northern mountains and mid‑highlands, with localized totals exceeding 100 mm and some stations recording over 180 mm. The intense precipitation raised the risk of flash floods, landslides and river overflow, especially in Cao Bằng, Tuyên Quang and Quảng Ninh provinces.

From 20 June onward, a broad heat wave is forecast to cover the northern lowlands, central coastal regions and the south, with maximum temperatures commonly reaching 35‑37 °C and occasional peaks above 38 °C. The heat is linked to a strong El Niño that is expected to persist through late 2026, increasing the likelihood of drought, water shortages and salt‑water intrusion in the central, highland and southern zones. Combined with reduced humidity, the heat raises fire‑hazard concerns in residential and forested areas. Coastal waters are also expected to see strong gusts and waves over 2 m, affecting maritime activity.

Overall, the weather pattern brings widespread rain‑related hazards now and a prolonged heat threat in the weeks ahead, impacting agriculture, infrastructure and public health across Vietnam.
