Vietnam faces heavy rain and thunderstorm warning across north, central, and south regions

The Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasts issued a warning for widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms, and severe weather from May 17‑21. Rainfall totals exceeding 300 mm were recorded at stations such as Mường Khoa 1 (306 mm) and Nấm Dẩn (262 mm). The alert covers the north, north‑central, central‑coastal, and southern regions, with expected accumulations of 20‑100 mm in many areas and localized peaks above 150 mm.

The forecast notes a high risk of tornadoes, hail, strong wind gusts, flash floods, landslides, and river overflows. Coastal waters are also expected to experience tornado‑like vortices, strong winds, and waves over 2 m, threatening vessel safety. Authorities warned that the weather could damage agriculture, topple trees, damage homes, disrupt transport, and harm infrastructure.
