ASIAD 2026: Vietnam concludes football campaigns and updates medal tally
The 2026 ASIAD in Japan continues with significant updates regarding the Vietnamese delegation. As of late September, China leads the medal standings with 105 gold medals, followed by Japan and South Korea. Vietnam currently holds 21st place in the overall standings with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 16 bronze medals.
In football, both the U23 and women's national teams have concluded their journeys after reaching the quarter-finals. The U23 team was eliminated following a 0-4 loss to South Korea, while the women's team narrowly lost 0-1 to China in extra time. Despite these exits, the U23 squad's participation served as a vital developmental opportunity for many players under the age of 21.
Other notable achievements include a historic milestone in badminton, where the men's doubles pair Nguyễn Đình Hoàng and Trần Đình Mạnh reached the quarter-finals for the first time in Vietnamese history. Upcoming competitions for Vietnam include canoeing, shooting, athletics, and sepak takraw, with high expectations for further medal wins in the final week of the games.
