Vietnam preparations for ASIAD 20

Vietnamese national sports teams are preparing for the ASIAD 20 games in Japan. Early reports indicate specific incentive structures from various federations, such as the Vietnam Shooting Federation and the Vietnam Athletics Federation, which offered significant cash rewards for gold, silver, and bronze medals to motivate athletes. During this period, the women’s football team conducted training in China, securing a 1-0 victory against the club Jiangsu.

As preparations continued, the Vietnam Sports Administration and the Vietnamese Olympic Committee secured additional support through cooperation agreements with sponsors like Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam and Vietcontent. While initial reward projections varied by federation, officials announced a general plan for medalists, with gold medalists expected to receive 100 million VND. The national goal for the delegation across disciplines including athletics, swimming, shooting, rowing, football, and esports is to secure between 4 and 6 gold medals.

By September 2026, the delegation officially departed for the games, which are scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya. The delegation comprises 498 members, including approximately 348 to 349 athletes, coaches, medical staff, and international experts. To support this large group, Vietnam is utilizing a hybrid funding model that combines state budget support with resources from local authorities, federations, and socialized funding.

Preparation involved intensive training camps in Japan, China, and South Korea, alongside talent reviews following the 2023 SEA Games. The selection process prioritized experienced athletes, those near continental top rankings, and promising young talents in disciplines ranging from traditional sports to esports and new martial arts.
