Vietnam car sales fall in May, rebound in June as hybrids surge

Overall automobile sales in Vietnam dropped 12% in May, with total market volume falling to 53,359 units versus April. VinFast sold 19,503 cars (‑22%) and Hyundai 3,921 (almost flat), while the combined output of VinFast, Hyundai and other manufacturers accounted for the entire decline.

In June the market recovered modestly, reaching 31,104 units – a 4% rise from May but still 2.7% below the same month in 2025. Fully‑built‑up (CBU) imports climbed 10% to 18,563 units, offsetting a 4% fall in domestically assembled cars (12,541 units). Hybrid vehicles led growth, with 2,347 units sold – up 41% month‑on‑month and 83% in the first half of 2026. VAMA member sales for June were 24,356 units, roughly unchanged from May and 6% lower year‑on‑year, while hybrid sales within the association rose sharply.

The data show a brief downturn in May followed by a partial recovery in June, driven primarily by imported cars and strong demand for fuel‑efficient hybrid models.
