Vietnam Gives Lifetime ID Cards to Citizens Born 1966‑1968

Under the new Vietnamese Identity Card Law effective 1 July 2024, renewal ages are set at 14, 25, 40 and 60. The law also allows citizens to obtain a new card up to two years before each renewal age, extending the card’s validity to the next age milestone. A special provision applies to those turning 58, 59 or 60 in 2026 – citizens born in 1966, 1967 or 1968 who apply for a new ID card that year will receive a card that remains valid for life, eliminating any future renewal requirement unless the card is lost, damaged or personal data must be updated.

The application process is fully digital via the VNeID platform and the national e‑service portal. Users can verify personal data online, schedule appointments at police stations, and complete fingerprint and photo capture on site, avoiding traditional queue‑waiting. A streamlined online procedure also handles lost or damaged cards without a physical visit to authorities.
