Vietnam health experts caution over‑eating specific fruits and grapefruit juice drug interactions

Nutrition specialists in Vietnam warn that consuming large amounts of certain fruits in summer can cause digestive discomfort, excess sugar intake and calorie overload, especially for people with sensitive gastrointestinal systems. The four fruits highlighted – watermelon, mango, durian and lychee – are popular for their cooling effect but may lead to bloating, diarrhoea or aggravate conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome when eaten in excess.

Separately, doctors note that grapefruit juice contains furanocoumarins that inhibit the intestinal enzyme CYP3A4, which normally metabolises many cardiovascular and lipid‑lowering drugs. Even a single 200 ml serving can raise blood levels of statins (atorvastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin), calcium‑channel blockers (amlodipine, nifedipine, felodipine), amiodarone and some diabetes medicines, increasing the risk of side‑effects. Orange juice may have the opposite effect, reducing drug absorption. Patients are advised to limit these juices and consult healthcare providers when taking affected medications.
