Vietnam weather: Intense heatwave and regional flooding

Northern and Central Vietnam are experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures in Bac Me, Tuyen Quang, reaching as high as 39.6°C. The heatwave is expected to persist in the North until approximately August 14, while Central Vietnam may see continued high temperatures for several more days. Meteorologists note that the heat is driven by a wind divergence field from China, despite the traditional start of autumn.

Authorities have warned of increased risks of forest fires and explosions due to high electricity demand and low humidity. There is also a significant risk of heatstroke and dehydration for those exposed to the heat. In some areas, perceived temperatures may be 2-4°C higher than official readings due to surface heat absorption from concrete and asphalt.

Simultaneously, heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in southern Quang Tri province. At least 13 low-lying points and overflow crossings have been submerged, cutting off transportation in several mountainous communes. Local authorities have deployed personnel to monitor high-risk areas and prevent residents from crossing flooded sections.
