Vietnam highway safety: Multi-vehicle crash highlights distance regulation challenges
A multi-vehicle collision involving five cars—including a passenger bus, two sedans, and two pickups—occurred on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway on September 18. Authorities from the Traffic Police Department reported that the accident was triggered by a vehicle failing to maintain a safe following distance during heavy weekend traffic, leading to a chain reaction. While no fatalities were reported, all five vehicles sustained damage. Tests confirmed that none of the drivers were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The incident has highlighted ongoing discussions regarding the implementation of strict safe-distance regulations on highways. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc noted that the rollout of these penalties faces challenges regarding legal frameworks, communication, and practical execution. To assist drivers, authorities are tasked with installing more signage on expressways and integrating safe-distance training into driver education programs. Experts recommend increasing reaction times to 3–5 seconds, which may require adding an extra 30–50 meters to the standard required distance during peak hours or slippery conditions.
