Experts in refrigeration warn that the start‑up phase of an AC unit consumes the most electricity, as the compressor works at high power to bring room temperature down. Frequent on‑off cycles force the compressor to restart many times, which can raise total electricity use by up to three times compared with steady operation.

The practice also stresses the compressor, shortening the unit’s lifespan and increasing the risk of breakdowns. Specialists advise keeping the system running continuously at a moderate temperature setting of 26‑28 °C, sealing rooms, cleaning filters regularly and directing air flow upward to improve cooling efficiency. These steps help households reduce monthly electricity costs without sacrificing comfort.
