Vietnam implements GIS technology for post-war mine clearance
A workshop held in Hanoi on September 30 highlighted the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to improve the efficiency of post-war mine clearance in Vietnam. Co-organized by the Vietnam National Mine Action Centre (VNMAC) and Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), the event shared results from a pilot study conducted in Quang Ngai province.
The study utilizes wartime bombing data, field surveys, population density, land-use planning, and socio-economic factors to create priority maps for clearing bombs, landmines, and unexploded ordnance (UXO). This approach aims to optimize limited financial, human, and equipment resources by moving beyond broad-area surveys to more precise, data-driven decision support.
