Vietnam labor union approves 7-day 2027 Lunar New Year holiday

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour has officially agreed to a proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the 2027 Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday schedule. The approved plan allows for a continuous 7-day break from February 4, 2027, to February 10, 2027.

For civil servants and public employees, the break consists of five statutory days (two days before Tet and three days after) plus two compensatory days. The Confederation noted that this duration is sufficient for workers to travel to their hometowns and rest, while also ensuring a timely return to work to support economic growth and production stability.

For workers in the non-state sector, employers may choose from three different arrangements for the holiday split between the end of the Year of the Horse and the beginning of the Year of the Goat. Employers are required to notify staff of their chosen schedule at least 30 days in advance.

Additionally, the Confederation supported a proposal for Vietnam Cultural Day in 2026, suggesting a holiday on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, with a working day swap to facilitate cultural participation.
