Vietnam launches campaign to identify fallen soldiers' remains
Vietnam is conducting a “500-day campaign” focused on searching for, collecting, and identifying the remains of fallen soldiers. This initiative aims to return the identities of martyrs to their families and hometowns through DNA testing and meticulous biological sampling.
In Phu Tho province, authorities have completed eight rounds of sample transfers to the Military Medical Institute, totaling 4,002 samples. The process involves careful excavation, sampling, transport, and preservation to ensure data accuracy for DNA identification.
In Military Region 4 and Nghe An province, the campaign has reached over 94% of its sampling targets. Military Region 4 has searched for and collected 310 sets of remains, including 158 within Vietnam and 152 in Laos. The region has also processed information for 17 mass grave sites containing 1,883 domestic and 347 Laotian remains. Nghe An and Military Region 4 were selected as pilot areas to establish procedures for sampling, transferring, and digitizing information to be applied nationwide.
