Vietnam launches VN1K: First 1,000-person genome dataset and population reference for precision medicine

More than 40 Vietnamese scientists published a study in the journal Nature Communications on July 22, presenting the most comprehensive Vietnamese genomic dataset to date. The project analysed DNA from 1,011 individuals drawn from 53 of the country’s 63 provinces and cities.

The analysis identified over 42 million genetic variants, including roughly 8.5 million that had never been recorded in international databases. Using this data the team created the Vietnamese PanGenome Reference (VPR), the first population‑specific reference genome for Vietnamese people, aimed at improving the accuracy of genetic analysis.

The research was led by Dr Vo Sy Nam, Executive Director of the Big Data Research Institute at VinUni University, and Prof Vu Ha Van, Scientific Director of the Institute. Initiated in 2018, the VN1K resource is intended to support genetics research, precision and preventive medicine, and to fill a longstanding gap in global genomic data concerning Southeast Asian populations.
