Overview
Vietnamese researchers published the VN1K project in *Nature Communications*, presenting the first large‑scale gene, multi‑omics and phenomics dataset for the Vietnamese population. The study sequenced DNA from 1,011 individuals across 53 provinces, identifying more than 42 million genetic variants, including roughly 8.5 million not found in international databases. Using this data the team created the Vietnamese PanGenome Reference (VPR), a population‑specific reference genome intended to improve the accuracy of genetic analysis for disease research, drug‑response prediction and precision‑medicine initiatives in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
The resource, initiated in 2018 at VinUni’s Large Data Research Institute and involving over 40 scientists and several international collaborators, supports predictive models for about 150 drug groups and programs such as "Right Drug for Me" that offers genetic testing for children with epilepsy. The VN1K dataset aims to fill a longstanding gap in global genomic data concerning Southeast Asian populations and to underpin future biomedical research in the region.
