Bac Ninh becomes Vietnam's ninth centrally-run city

Bac Ninh has officially become Vietnam’s ninth centrally-run city following the implementation of National Assembly Resolution No. 39/2026/QH16 on September 20, 2026. The new city is established based on the entire natural area and population of the former Bac Ninh province, covering approximately 4,713 km² with nearly 4 million residents and 99 administrative units.

During the announcement ceremony on September 19, General Secretary and President To Lam presented the resolution and conferred the First-class Labour Order upon the Party organization, authorities, and people of Bac Ninh for their outstanding socio-economic achievements. President To Lam urged the city to develop a modern, green, and smart urban model that balances industrial growth with the preservation of the distinctive Kinh Bac cultural identity.

Economically, Bac Ninh serves as a major industrial hub, particularly in high-tech electronics, attracting significant foreign direct investment from corporations such as Samsung, Foxconn, and Canon. The city's GRDP reached approximately $20 billion in 2025, maintaining strong growth driven by the industrial and construction sectors.
