Vietnam maintains electricity supply amid record heat waves

In late June 2026 Vietnam experienced an unprecedented heat wave, with temperatures reaching 40‑50 °C in the north, especially Hanoi. The surge in demand pushed the national power system to new records – total generation of about 1,206 million kWh and a peak capacity of 57,537 MW, while the northern grid alone produced roughly 630 million kWh and reached 30,279 MW. Deputy Minister Nguyễn Sinh Nhật Tân said the grid kept sufficient reserve margins, although they dipped briefly when loads peaked, and that authorities mobilised all available sources – hydro, coal‑fired, gas‑fired plants, imported electricity and rooftop solar – to ensure stable supply.

In Thanh Hóa province, officials warned that extreme temperatures were overloading households and businesses, raising fire‑risk concerns. Local agencies inspected vulnerable electricity points, reinforced weak spots on embankments, and prepared contingency measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season to keep power flowing safely to towns such as Sầm Sơn.
