Vietnam mandates ID card renewal for four age groups in 2026

Under the Vietnamese Civil Status Law, citizens must obtain a new identity card when they reach the ages of 14, 25, 40 or 60. In 2026, four birth‑year cohorts will be affected: those born in 2012 (turning 14), 2001 (turning 25), 1986 (turning 40) and 1966 (turning 60). The renewal process updates personal data and biometric records and is required to keep access to banking, online services and other public transactions.

Failure to replace an expired card can result in administrative fines and practical obstacles such as blocked bank accounts, inability to verify identity online, or delays in government procedures. Cards issued after the holder reaches age 58 remain valid indefinitely, unless lost, damaged, or if personal information changes.
