Vietnam Ministry of Construction drops time‑limit condo ownership proposal

The Ministry of Construction announced that the draft Housing Law will no longer include the provision for time‑limited ownership of condominiums. The amendment removes the clause that would end owners' rights when a building reached the end of its designed lifespan or required demolition, and the draft remains under review for further revisions.

Deputy Minister Nguyễn Văn Sinh explained that a condo’s usable period will now be based on its design lifespan and periodic inspections, typically every 50‑70 years. If a building is still safe, its usage may be extended; if it is deemed unsafe, it must be demolished and rebuilt, with costs borne by residents and compensation provided according to land‑use rights. Experts noted that the removed provision had been praised for addressing issues of ownership tied to land and could have encouraged a shift toward renting rather than buying homes.
