Vietnam Ministry of Home Affairs proposes 7-day 2027 Lunar New Year holiday

The Ministry of Home Affairs has submitted a proposal to the Government regarding the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday schedule for 2027. According to Nguyen Thi Quyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Employment, the proposal suggests a continuous 7-day holiday for civil servants and public employees.

The proposed break would run from Thursday, February 4, 2027, to the end of Wednesday, February 10, 2027. This includes the statutory 5-day holiday period (2 days before Tet and 3 days after) plus 2 compensatory days off because the holiday coincides with weekends. The Ministry stated this arrangement aims to allow workers traveling from distant provinces more time to prepare for and celebrate the holiday.

For employees in the business sector, employers are given flexibility to choose between two options: taking 1 day at the end of the year and 4 days at the beginning of the new year, or taking 2 days at the end of the year and 3 days at the beginning of the new year.
