Vietnam seeks high-tech R&D and semiconductor investment

Vietnam is actively seeking to upgrade its role in the global technology supply chain by attracting high-quality investments in advanced sectors. Vietnamese leaders are meeting with major multinational corporations to encourage a shift from simple assembly to high-value research, development, and design.

President To Lam met with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, who stated that the company aims to establish Vietnam as its third-largest global AI research hub. The discussions focused on expanding long-term investments in semiconductors, robotics, 5G/6G, and data centers.

Similarly, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung met with Samsung executives, noting the company's significant economic contributions, including $24 billion in cumulative investment and $500 billion in cumulative exports. The government is urging Samsung to increase its technological depth and involvement in R&D.

Regarding Chinese investment, Prime Minister Hung has called on Chinese firms to move beyond traditional manufacturing toward high-tech ventures like artificial intelligence and clean energy. This comes as Vietnam navigates complex geopolitical dynamics regarding 5G infrastructure and security concerns from Western partners.
