Vietnam police crackdown on AI‑generated fake news, remove 86 million accounts

Vietnam’s cyber‑security agency (A05) reported that in the first three months of 2026 a major social‑media platform removed 86 million accounts linked to the creation and spread of AI‑generated disinformation. The police recorded 100,000‑180,000 fake news items each year over the past five years, with AI‑generated content causing public panic, especially after severe weather events in 2025. In early 2026, Hanoi police identified a Facebook user who posted an AI‑generated video titled “Truyền nhân Lạc Long Quân đây rùi,” and another who shared a fabricated image of a man fainting at a gas station. Both admitted using AI tools to attract views. According to Phạm Khánh Hòa of the A05 agency, “AI models can now simulate images, voices and even movements with very high accuracy, making it hard for the public to distinguish real from fake.” The agency continues to dismantle AI‑driven fraud cases and prosecute violators.
