Vietnam police warn of AI film and online loan scams
Police in Hanoi and Da Nang have issued warnings regarding sophisticated digital scams targeting users through AI-generated content and predatory online lending.
In Hanoi, authorities cautioned against fraudulent applications that use the popularity of AI-created short films to lure victims. These apps promise users can earn money while watching content, but they ultimately force users to watch excessive advertisements, complete online tasks, or pay fees to unlock episodes. Scammers often use fake reward balances to build trust before demanding real money for account upgrades or transaction fees. Additionally, these malicious apps can infect devices with malware, leading to the theft of bank details and personal data.
In Da Nang, police highlighted the dangers of illegal online credit activities. Scammers use enticing advertisements for quick, unsecured loans to trap individuals in high-interest debt. When borrowers struggle to repay, criminals may use illegal debt collection tactics, including threats, harassment of relatives, and the unauthorized collection and distribution of personal information to coerce payment.
