Vietnam police warn of Caller ID Spoofing scams
Nghe An Provincial Police have issued a warning regarding the increasing use of Caller ID Spoofing technology by scammers. This technique allows criminals to impersonate trusted entities, such as banks or law enforcement agencies, by manipulating the displayed phone number on a recipient's screen.
Cybersecurity expert Ngo Minh Hieu explained that the rise of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has significantly lowered the technical and financial barriers for these attacks. Scammers utilize intermediate platforms, including Telegram bots and Cloud Call services, to intercept and alter data fields, making a fraudulent call appear to originate from an official hotline.
Once trust is established through a legitimate-looking number, scammers typically employ psychological tactics. Common scenarios include notifying victims of locked bank accounts to steal OTP codes or threatening individuals with involvement in drug or money laundering investigations to coerce them into transferring funds to 'safe' accounts.
