Vietnam police warn of fraud schemes impersonating officials, costing victims over 100 million VND

Police in Cao Bằng province uncovered a scam in which callers pretended to be military officers offering to sell large quantities of army‑issued bunk beds. The fraudster asked the victim, H.V.T., to transfer 168 million VND before delivering the goods. Local authorities intervened, stopped the transaction and warned residents to verify any large‑value requests.

In Ninh Bình and Hanoi, another scheme involved scammers posing as land‑registry or vehicle‑registration officials, claiming to integrate property or vehicle documents into the VNeID digital identity platform. Using a Zalo account named “An An,” they instructed victims to share personal documents, install unverified apps and complete facial‑verification steps, ultimately siphoning more than 122 million VND from a victim’s bank account. Police have urged citizens not to share personal data, OTPs or make payments for document integration, and to use only official government portals.
