Vietnam police warn of rising impersonation and seasonal scams
Authorities in Vietnam are warning citizens against increasingly sophisticated fraudulent schemes involving impersonation and seasonal scams.
In Ha Tinh Province, an elderly man nearly lost significant assets after receiving a call from an individual posing as a local police chief. The scammer claimed the man was involved in a criminal case involving a bank account with 69 million VND and demanded money for “verification.” The victim attempted to sell five gold pieces to fund the transfer, but a local jewelry shop owner noticed suspicious behavior and intervened, reporting the incident to the Thien Cam Commune Police.
Additionally, the Bac Ninh City Police have issued warnings regarding scams targeting the Mid-Autumn Festival. Fraudsters are reportedly creating fake social media accounts and websites that mimic government agencies, schools, or charities to offer fraudulent gift programs or child support. These criminals use deceptive links, QR codes, and requests for personal data—such as ID numbers and bank details—to steal identities or demand “processing fees” under the guise of completing gift registrations.
