Vietnam power grid faces safety risks from corridor violations

The National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) has reported eight incidents involving violations of high-voltage power grid safety corridors since the beginning of the year. These incidents pose significant risks to the stability of the national electricity supply, economic activities, and human lives.

Common causes of these disruptions include flying objects such as kites and UAVs, as well as construction machinery and cranes operating within prohibited safety distances. For instance, a kite getting caught in a 220kV line in January caused a four-hour power outage affecting industrial production in the western area of Hai Phong. Another incident in August involved a crane violating safety distances on a 220kV line near Yen My.

Authorities emphasize that many violations stem from a failure to recognize risks during construction, production, or daily activities rather than intentional interference. Violations can lead to electrical discharges, equipment damage, and severe injuries such as electric shocks or burns. Local authorities are working with police to investigate these incidents and issue administrative fines to deter future violations.
