Overview

Vietnam is navigating complex energy challenges involving long-term supply security, infrastructure safety, and industrial demand. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has warned of a potential electricity deficit of approximately 4,256 MW by 2027, which could escalate to nearly 14,000 MW by 2030 if power source and grid projects do not progress sufficiently. On a local level, infrastructure development presents both risks and opportunities. In Nghệ An Province, construction activities have altered ground levels, reducing safety distances between the ground and existing power lines and transformers. Conversely, in industrial areas such as Ham Tan, proactive investments in electrical infrastructure are supporting industrial expansion, providing the stable power supplies necessary for businesses to plan production increases. Recent reports from the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) highlight growing safety risks to the national grid. Since the beginning of the year, eight incidents involving violations of high-voltage power grid safety corridors have been recorded. These disruptions are often caused by flying objects, such as kites and UAVs, or construction machinery and cranes operating within prohibited distances. Specific incidents include a kite becoming caught in a 220kV line in January, which caused a four-hour outage affecting industrial production in western Hai Phong, and a crane violating safety distances on a 220kV line near Yen My in August. Authorities note that many violations stem from a failure to recognize risks during daily activities or construction rather than intentional interference. Local authorities are now working with police to investigate these incidents and issue administrative fines to deter future violations. By the first half of 2026, electricity production and imports reached 171.54 billion kWh, a 9.85% increase over the previous year, with peak system capacity hitting a record 57,537 MW according to Vietnam Electricity (EVN).
