Hanoi launches major road and sidewalk overhaul, imposing barricades and traffic changes

The Hanoi Department of Construction announced a city‑wide programme to repair and upgrade sidewalks that have deteriorated due to recent underground works for water, electricity and drainage lines. Deputy Director Trương Hải Long said new regulations on street‑edge design and material standards have been issued, and responsibility for monitoring and maintenance has been delegated to wards to prevent repeated digging and premature wear.

At the same time, the department issued detailed traffic‑adjustment orders for the Thăng Long Avenue corridor, where sections between km 7+760 and km 8+860 will be fully barricaded to enable construction of overpasses, tunnels and utility works. Vehicles will be rerouted onto temporary lanes, with speed limits reduced to a maximum of 60 km/h. The measures aim to minimise disruption while ensuring safe progress of the infrastructure projects slated for completion by early 2027.
