Vietnam pushes English exam reforms toward logical thinking over rote memorization

The 2026 high‑stakes English component of Vietnam’s national high‑school graduation exam is being praised for its difficulty and emphasis on logical reasoning, prompting educators to move away from rote grammar drills. Student Ho Ánh Kiệt, a final‑year marketing major, said he felt "lost" when foreign colleagues spoke English, illustrating the gap between classroom learning and real‑world communication. Language expert Trần Anh Khoa explained that many learners “study the words and structures in isolation without understanding how English works,” recommending a “Linear‑thinking” approach that simplifies complex sentences and connects ideas.

In response, private language schools such as Magic English are offering structured, personalised programmes that assess learners’ initial level and build a clear curriculum. The centre advertises courses ranging from IELTS and PTE foundations to intensive DET preparation, aiming to develop comprehensive skills and help students achieve international certification targets.
