Vietnam reviews school mergers and two-session teaching models

Vietnam is addressing the complexities of school organization, focusing on both the implementation of two-session daily teaching models and the consequences of school mergers.

At Ngô Mây Primary School, educators are utilizing the second session of the school day to reinforce core knowledge in subjects like Math and Vietnamese while integrating life skills, reading, and physical activities. This approach aligns with the 2018 General Education Program, which allows the second session to be used for STEM, arts, sports, and student interests to maintain engagement and support students who need extra help.

Concurrently, Deputy Prime Minister Lê Tiến Châu has called for a review of large-scale schools formed through mergers. While merging smaller schools can consolidate resources and reduce management costs, concerns have been raised regarding whether massive institutions—some with thousands of students—can be managed effectively without compromising safety and educational quality. The directive emphasizes that school restructuring should prioritize student rights and developmental opportunities over mere administrative statistics.
