Vietnam mandates nationwide use of E10 fuel from June 2026

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued Circular 50/2025, requiring that from 1 June 2026 all gasoline stations in Vietnam sell only E10 fuel – a blend of 10 % ethanol and standard gasoline. The same directive asks auto‑ and motor‑bike manufacturers, through the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and the Vietnam Motorbike Manufacturers Association (VAMM), to evaluate the compatibility of every model with E10, compile a list of fully compatible, conditionally compatible and non‑recommended vehicles, and publish guidance for consumers.

The ministry states that most current vehicles, including those with electronic fuel injection, can use E10 without technical adjustments; older cars and motorbikes built before 2000 or equipped with carburettors may need fuel‑system cleaning, filter replacement or should continue using E5 until further assessment. No evidence has been found that E10 harms engines, though a modest 2‑3 % increase in fuel consumption is possible. The ethanol component improves octane rating and reduces CO and hydrocarbon emissions. Manufacturers are instructed to issue official notices, train dealers and service centres, and set up a consumer‑feedback process. The rollout aims to cut emissions, lower dependence on fossil fuels and enhance energy security.
