Vietnam stock market to be upgraded to FTSE Secondary Emerging Market status

FTSE Russell has announced that Vietnam's stock market will be upgraded from frontier to secondary emerging market status, effective September 21, 2026. This transition is part of the September 2026 semi-annual review for the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (FTSE GEIS) in the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of this upgrade, 27 Vietnamese stocks have been added to the FTSE Global All Cap Index. These include large-cap companies like VCB, VIC, and VHM; mid-cap companies such as BID, HPG, and VPB; and 21 small-cap stocks, including Masan Group (MSN), Masan Consumer (MCH), and SeABank (SSB). The integration into the FTSE index system will be implemented in four stages between September 2026 and September 2027, with weight increases of 10%, 20%, 35%, and 35%.

Analysts suggest this move could significantly increase international capital inflows. Vietcap estimates that the potential capital inflow for Vietnam could reach approximately 78.9 trillion VND (about 3 billion USD) throughout the transition process. In response to the upgrade, the State Securities Commission of Vietnam has engaged with Nasdaq to strengthen connectivity between Vietnamese and US capital markets and improve market transparency and accessibility for international investors.
