Vietnam strengthens disaster prevention and climate change response

Vietnam is intensifying its efforts to manage extreme weather, floods, and climate change through new proactive risk management strategies at both national and provincial levels.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued an action plan focused on ensuring the safety of hydropower dams and reservoirs, maintaining the stability of the power system, and securing the supply of essential goods like petroleum during natural disasters. The plan emphasizes a shift from reactive response to early prevention, utilizing scientific data and technology to monitor dam safety and provide timely warnings to downstream residents.

In Khanh Hoa Province, local authorities have implemented a similar plan to minimize loss of life and property. The provincial strategy prioritizes the inspection of irrigation works, transport systems, and drainage, while preparing relocation plans for residents in landslide-prone areas. Khanh Hoa aims to integrate digital technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and GIS, to transition from phenomenon-based warnings to impact-based warnings that provide specific details for local communities.
