Vietnam targets ASEAN AI hub status by 2030

At the AWS Cloud and AI Day in Hanoi, Vietnamese officials and industry leaders discussed the nation's strategic shift toward becoming a regional technology hub. Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Hoàng Minh emphasized that Vietnam's goal extends beyond expanding physical infrastructure or deploying isolated AI applications. Instead, the country aims to build a comprehensive ecosystem involving government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations to master and develop new technologies.

To achieve this, Vietnam is focusing on four key areas: cloud computing and data center infrastructure, the development of secure and efficient AI platforms, rapid human resource training, and ecosystem formation. Currently, Vietnam possesses 42 commercial data centers and high 4G and 5G coverage.

Eric Yeo, General Director of AWS Vietnam, stated that the country is on track to become an AI hub for ASEAN by 2030. He noted that AI in Vietnam has transitioned from an experimental phase to one that creates real economic impact. According to research, approximately 26% of Vietnamese businesses—roughly 245,000 entities—have proactively integrated AI into their operations, an increase from 18% the previous year.
