Vietnam economy shows strong growth and deepening global trade integration
Vietnam is experiencing significant economic momentum, characterized by robust GDP growth and expanding integration into global supply chains. In the first half of 2026, the nation's GDP grew by 8.18%, supported by strong industrial production. The manufacturing and processing sectors saw a 12.5% increase, contributing to a rising industrial production index.
Trade relations with the European Union have reached a major milestone under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). As of the seventh year of implementation, approximately 99% of tariff lines for Vietnamese goods have been reduced to zero. In the first six months of 2026, bilateral trade reached $41.4 billion, with Vietnam maintaining a trade surplus of roughly $22 billion. This agreement has significantly increased the proportion of Vietnamese exports utilizing preferential certificates of origin.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) continues to drive growth, particularly in industrial real estate, electronics, and high-tech sectors. Realized FDI in the first eight months of 2026 reached an estimated $17.25 billion, a 12% year-on-year increase. To maintain this trajectory, the government is focusing on attracting high-quality, long-term capital and promoting green, digital, and sustainable production standards to meet evolving global requirements.
Additionally, the Vietnamese stock market is set for a major upgrade, with FTSE Russell transitioning it from frontier to secondary emerging market status on September 21, 2026.
