Vietnam prioritizes specialized semiconductor chips for strategic growth

Vietnam is prioritizing the development of specialized semiconductor chips to enhance technological self-reliance and integrate more deeply into the global semiconductor value chain. During a seminar in Hanoi organized by the National Centre for Semiconductor Chip Pilot Production Support, experts and officials discussed the strategic importance of this sector for national security and economic competitiveness.

Nguyen Anh Tuan, director of the National Centre, announced that the Ministry of Science and Technology is preparing a list of approximately 20 categories of specialized chips for priority state procurement. These categories include AI, edge computing, next-generation telecommunications, sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), power electronics, and hardware security.

The national strategy, outlined in Decision No. 1018/QD-TTg, utilizes the formula C = SET + 1, where “S” represents specialized chips. This approach aims to leverage Vietnam’s existing chip design workforce and established electronics industry to master high-value stages such as design, verification, testing, and integration.
