Vietnam Tax Authority launches campaign to clean up tax identification numbers
The General Department of Taxation has launched a nationwide campaign titled “Clean up tax identification numbers - Removing bottlenecks in business,” running from May 21 to December 31, 2026. The initiative aims to address risks associated with businesses that have ceased operations without completing legal procedures or those that have abandoned their registered business addresses.
In provinces such as Gia Lai, authorities are actively working to resolve issues where companies are established or closed without proper documentation. This situation creates risks for legitimate businesses, as they may face difficulties with tax deductions or VAT credits if their suppliers are found to be non-operational. There are also concerns regarding the use of personal identification documents to create “ghost” companies, which often only come to light when tax debts or legal violations occur.
The campaign focuses on two primary groups: taxpayers who have stopped operating but have not completed the process to terminate their tax identification status, and taxpayers no longer active at their registered business locations. Tax authorities are utilizing information technology to review these cases and are providing guidance to taxpayers to help them dissolve, restore, or terminate their tax status in accordance with regulations.
